Arthur Becker is a unique entrepreneur. He tends to follow his heart when it comes to deciding which venture to pursue next. He’s owned and managed dozens of companies in various industries. Lately, he seems focused on real estate. It’s one of his closest passions along with technology.

Like all great entrepreneurs, not all of Becker’s ventures were successful. For example, one venture he invested in was a company that produced specialized binoculars called Bnox. The Young Center: Helping Immigrant Children In Arizona

The Young Center is an amazing non-profit that helps immigrant children. Pheonix Arizonal now has a Young Center office, as of 2016. Each year, there are many immigrant children who arrive in Arizona. These children are sometimes with an adult that is looking out for them, but sometimes on their own, smuggled in by adults who do not have their best interest at heart.

If apprehended, even the children that are with caring adults will be separated from these adults because Arizona does not have family prisons. The children that go through a court system are treated with laws that are the same as for adults. The Young Center is a civil rights organization that is working towards helping these vulnerable children.

The organization is fighting for changing the laws that apply to these children, so that the law will reflect that they are young, and developmentally very different than adults, and deserve unique treatment that accounts for their age. The Young Center trains advocates who can help these children move through the court system. Without advocates, immigrant children are forced to navigate the complicated judicial system on their own without representation, which is inherently unfair from the get go.

In a system that is supposed to give each person a fair representation, this is an obvious flaw. The Young Center also works with other organizations to provide support and services to young immigrants. Many of the immigrant children arrive from Guatemala, and speak an indigenous language distinct from the Spanish spoken in Arizona. This makes their journey all the more difficult. The Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund is a donor to the Youth Center, and supports the important work that they are doing. The Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund was started almost ten years ago. It is the result of a civil rights case that ended in settlement. In 2017, reporters Mike Lacey and Jim Larkin were each taken from their homes and put into jail. They were incarcerated because of a story which they exposed through a report in the local paper.

They were exposing mis-management and suspect financial activities within the Sheriffs office. The arrest incited national outcry, and ultimately was deemed unconstitutional.

Micheal Lacey and Jim Larkin were both reporters who did not shy away from reporting the news as they discovered it. They knew, better than most, that they had a constitutional right to freedom of speech.

Both men worked in the newspaper industry for many years prior to their arrest. Micheal Lacey started the Pheonix New Times with Jim Larkin as his business partner in the 1970s. Lacey acted as the head editor while Larkin took over advertising and managing the paper finances.

Micheal Lacey is from New Jersey, and moved to Arizona in order to attend College. Jim Larkin was born and raised in Pheonix, Arizona.

 

Advocacy for Civil, Human and Migrant Rights

America is a progressive nation, but there are still few people with some prejudices that target the minority groups. These minority groups such as the disabled, immigrants, and other racial minorities are vulnerable and sometimes are disregarded because they don’t fit into a particular mainframe of the society.

There are non-profit corporations such as the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund among others which focus on protecting this minority section of the community.

The Lacey and Larkin Frontera fund was started by Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin. The two co-founders who are journalists founded the detailed fund after an allegation against Maricopa County. Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin revealed information about grand jury proceedings covering details about Sheriff Joe Arpaio. This revelation prompted their arrest on October 18, 2007, by Maricopa County. Grand jury subpoenas required the identity of New Times online readers of stories involving the lawman.

Jim Larkin and Mike Lacey were residents of Phoenix, Arizona who wrote articles for a media outlet in the city. Sheriff Joe Arpaio served in the same town and had initiated arrests of many people who he claimed were in the country illegally. However, it was discovered that almost all of those he arrested, were from the Hispanic community and were legal immigrants.

The arrest of Larkin and Lacey created an awakening call for the Hispanic community, and a large number of people from the community rose up to protest against the punitive realities that the minority in the United States go through.

Larkin and Lacey fought to preserve their First Amendment rights and sued Maricopa County. Their case went to an Appeals Court which granted the two a settlement of $3.75 million. They dedicated this $3.75 million settlement to fund migrant rights organizations in Arizona.

The Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund was started to safeguard the interests of minority groups in the US, and up to now, they support Arizona-based organizations that are in advocacy for civil, human and migrant rights, civic participation and freedom of speech. One of the groups which are backed up by Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund include la linea fronteriza- the Mexican border. Other than the Frontera Fund the two journalists are also co-founders of Village Voice Media and Phoenix New Times.

American Civil Liberties Union, ACLU is another group which advocates for civil, human and migrants’ rights. In 1920, ACLU was instituted to enforce and expand the civil rights and civil liberties of immigrants. The group responds to the violation of rights issues of all persons including the disabled, gays and prisoners.

ACLU protects immigrants’ rights and liberties through public outreach, use of targeted impact litigation and advocacy. The organization has represented immigrants in almost all the significant legal struggle focusing on challenging laws that impose a mandatory and indefinite detention, discriminate on nationality basis and deny their access to the court.

National Urban League is another group that focuses on protecting the rights of African Americans. This organization offers civic education on human rights, legal assistance and defend against harassment that could arise in schools, workplace or society.
