Mikhail Blagosklonny and the Relationship between Aging and Cancer

Is there any direct or indirect relationship between aging and the treatment of cancer? Can cancer treatments be used to reverse the physical effects of aging? These are just some of the questions over which Mikhail Blagosklonny is best known. Blagosklonny is a trained oncologist who specializes in the study of aging and cancer.

Out of his research into the relationships between aging and cancer, Mikhail Blagosklonny ended up hypothesizing about the part played by TOR signaling in cancer and aging- a hypothesis that took the scientific world by storm. In is hypothesis, Blagosklonny proposed the use of Rapamycin to reverse the physical effects of aging and in doing so extend the lifespans of human beings. Rapamycin is one of the most popular drugs used to treat cancer in practically every part of the world and Mikhail proposed that its effects on cancer cells could be harnessed to reverse aging. Although this still remains a hypothesis to date, Mikhail Blagosklonny remains one of the best known figures in the scientific world who advocate for the use of Rapamycin for research into longevity and life extension.

Mikhail Blagosklonny has had an illustrious and successful academic career as well as a great career as a scientist and researcher. He earned his MD in Internal Medicine from the First Pavlov State Medical University of St. Petersburg and went on to also earn his PhD later from the same institution. In 2002 Mikhail was appointed at the New York Medical College in Valhalla, NY to serve as an associate professor and this is the position that he held until he moved over to the Ordway Research Institute where he worked as a senior scientist. It is from here that he moved to his current position at Roswell Park Cancer Institute where he works as a Professor of Oncology to date.
